God Speaks: A Play In One Act
In memory of Erskine Scott Wood.
To the left of the stage one can see Peter approaching along a path. Center stage, God is seen in his bathrobe watering his portulaca. He is heard humming to himself.
GOD: MMMmmmm Il balen del suo soriso d'una stella…mmmhummm
PETER: What on earth…are you singing G–d?
GOD: One of my favorites Peter, The Il Balen from Trovatore…but tut, come here and look at my Portulaca, how it has grown. It is a fair 7 inches now Peter.
God is distracted from caring for his Portulaca by a great din coming up from earth.
GOD: What is that hue and cry from my sons' silly people down there — Arrrrgh! They fairly send my mind to reeling.
PETER: There is so much noise G–d , that I can hardly make it out. Oh yes! Something about needing more rain in California, payers for peace in the Balkans and much wailing and gnashing of teeth for the starving millions in Africa.
GOD: Well by myself, if you don't do something about it soon you will ruin my time for my Yoga studies.
Peter is seen filling his watering can and spraying it over California. He returns to God, who by this time is sitting in the padmasana posture.
PETER: There, I fixed California but I swear — oops, sorry about that — I declare I can do nothing about the praying masses G–d.
GOD: Nor can I Peter. Don't they realize that I cannot break my own laws. I mean, really! Once I have put a law into motion, I cannot take it back. No, not even me Peter. My Son's people just do not understand Karma at all. My son told them, As ye sow, so also shall ye reap.
Now Peter, just think about that. It says, so also shall ye reap. The one thing about my son was his directness Peter. The Earth people think they can willy nilly do whatever they want, and then of all things, not take the consequences. Well I never! You know Peter, when the consequences do come, they think a prayer or two will help. It fairly makes me laugh (much laughter is heard). Oh! They are such whiners! Now! What's that commotion Peter?
PETER: Oh, I am sorry G–d, but I forgot to lift the watering can off California and now they praying for the rain to stop.
Peter rushes out to lift the watering can. On the way he trips over his left foot. He is heard to shout Damn!
As Peter returns, God is seen closing the shutters to his patio, shutting out the infernal praying noise coming up from earth.
God walks over to his Yoga mat and in one unceasingly slow and gracefully controlled movement, lifts himself in to a headstand.
Peter, not wanting to disturb him further leaves left stage, and peace reigns at last on Gods patio.
The next chapters punctuate what is needed in order to wake up!
