Is Christ Buried in Kashmir?

Sept 30,1978

Srinagar, Kashmir, India.

Tucked away down a muddy lane in the oldest part of Srinigar is an ancient tomb that many Moslems believe contains the remains of Jesus Christ. Their belief is that Christ, venerated by Moslems as a Holy Prophet did not die on the cross but fled from Jerusalem to Kashmir with his Mother Mary, where he lived and preached and died at the age of 120.

The thesis which has been argued for more than 80 years is propagated principally by the evangelical Ahmadiyya Sect, which has organized an international conference in London to discuss and attempt once again to prove it.

Some serious scholars here say there is pretty convincing circumstantial evidence to substantiate that Jesus did in fact spend at least part of his life in Kashmir and Tibet.

An old Persian inscription on a wooden tablet over the tomb says it is the last resting place of Yuz Asaf, who is identified in the classic manuscripts of this region as being the same person as the Prophet Isa or Jesus.

The theory of Christ's burial in Kashmir was first put foreward by the Ahmadiyya movement in the writings of Mirza Ghulam Ahmed, in a book called, Jesus in India, published in 1899. Ahmed contended that Jesus did not die on the cross. He escaped and journeyed with his Mother to India in search of the 10 lost tribes of Israel.

He quotes Christian as well as Moslem scriptures, old medical and historical texts and ancient Buddhist records in an attempt to show that Jesus travelled, via Persia, Afghanistan, Sind, Punjab, Kashmir and Tibet. The Ahmadiyya have published a mass of literature on the subject and have won some startling support for their theory.

Professor Mohammed Yasin, head of the Post Graduate Department of History at the Kashmir university, after studying the theory for three years, and although an opponent of Ahmadiyya, concluded that Jesus was indeed buried here in Kashmir.

This great discovery has been hidden under so much religious controversy. Yasin supports the idea that Moses too is buried in Kashmir. Old Jewish graves are found all over Kashmir, and that Mary is the ancient hill station of Muree, now known as Mari — getting its name from Mary.

There is strong evidence that because of place names and physical description that Kashmir, and not Palestine, was the Promised Land of the Old Testament.

Yesin compares the Biblical Bethpeor with Bandipoor, now known as Behatpoor in Kashmir, and Mount Nebo with Naboo Hill which commands a fine view of the Kashmir Valley.

These writers say there is proof in writing found, and even writings in the Gospels, to prove that Jesus did not die on the cross. He was on the cross for only three to six hours, while death by crucifixion usually took three days or longer.

After several secret meetings with his disciples Jesus set out with Mary and Thomas for the East, on what was at that time an already well travelled route. Thomas travelled to South India, while Jesus and Mary travelled north.

As a side note, many Indians in Southern India have been Christian since about the 1st century AD. As a result, many Christians in India do not consider themselves converts as they have been Christian for a longer time than most European Christians.

Thomas the Apostle is said to be buried at Parangimalai, St. Thomas Mount, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

In Southern India you will find many Christians with the last name of Thomas.
